The Role of Media in Society

Film and Media Studies is an interdisciplinary academic discipline that documents the growth of the theory and criticism of Film and Media. It addresses all media and forms of media counting motion picture media, television media, new media, digital media, and new media technology. This means how these media forms are involved in processes of constructing and reproducing culture, society, and politics as well as how these forms are constructed by these meanings.

In film and Media studies there are two big areas of Film as Art and Film as Industry. This is because one needs to be specialized in areas such as Film categories, the formation of the stories, parts of the shots, forms of cuts, forms of transition, utilizing music as sound, and handling the stage.

Students explore such directors’ works as the start of movie movements analyzing the semiotics of films, and how they convey meaning/ elicit emotions. However, concerning the semiotics, psychoanalysis, feminism, postcolonialism, and other theories of the film it is possible to understand such processes.

Media Studies also expands the area of focus not only to the movies but also to the other forms of media. These are television studies where you get to critically write and produce television programs, their distribution, and audiences; digitalization and new media which focuses on the effects of the internet, social networks, and video games; and media industries which examine the production, funding, and distribution of media products.

Moreover, the subjects of Film and Media Studies analyzed the role of media in society and, thus, they are concerned with topics like representation, identity, ideologies, and power. This involves assessing how media portrays some of the social relations or concerns and the impact of such portrayals on the perception of a given community on the processed culture.

In conclusion,

the subject of Film and Media Studies is beneficial in the sense that it offers the viewers the big picture of how the media influences society and in a like manner how the society molds the media. This branch of the study comprises different subjects and lies in between the theoretical and the practical context, which allows exploring the media critically while at the same time exercising new ideas in practice
